Take a trip through time on the Wellington Cable Car. Discover the city’s heritage on this iconic Wellington landmark as you travel from Lambton Quay to Kelburn through tunnels and bridges that were constructed 120 years ago taking in our amazing light show along the way. Once at Kelburn, enjoy the gorgeous views of Wellington and the harbour Te Whanganui-a-Tara. This is the perfect connection to the Cable Car Museum, Space Place, Zealandia or for a beautiful downhill walk through the botanical gardens.

Explore the engineering that makes it all happen with our 45 minute tour, during which you will experience:

Ride up on the Cable Car with a Cable Car guide

Stop at Talavera to observe and discuss how the track and cable work

Visit the current winding room at the top of the hill.

Please note, guided tour availability may be limited from October to April due to cruise ship season.

Common Q&A

What is the best time for schools to travel?
During school hours, between 9am – 3pm on weekdays as this is our quietest time.

Does our group have to return straight away?
No. With the cars running every 10 minutes you can return at any time.

Worried that your group is too large?

We are happy to run extra trips to accommodate your group. For guided tours, the ideal group size is 20-30 people. However, the maximum number we can take is 40 people. If your group is larger than 40 you will need to book two time slots.
